Math | Subjects We Teach | Bible History

Subject: Reading/Literature

History lives and breathes in the writings of the men and women who authored great works of literature through the ages. Columbia coordinates our students’ exposure to these works with the periods under study in History. Time is limited, so we can only cover a few samples from the period. Students are guided through certain selections together, and asked to choose one for independent study.

Whenever possible, we try to use at least part of the original version of the works we study, also learning to appreciate their literary qualities. In these upper grades, we are building on the exposure that students may have had in the lower grades, while preparing for an even deeper study of the same periods and authors at the high school level.

Students should expect to have some focused reading time each day in the works we study, whether that be at school or at home. They should also expect some occasional short written assignments of their own.
