Extracurricular: Concert Band

Director Rob Garrett has led The Dalles Christian Homeschool Band for many years, and for the last several years has practiced at Bethany Lutheran Church. That relationship has developed into a mutually beneficial connection with Columbia Lutheran School. The band is able to use the school’s space for rehearsals, and the school can offer qualifying students the opportunity to play in the band.

In some years, Mr. Garrett runs a beginning band for students who would like to try a new instrument, or learn one for the first time. After a year, these students are ready to play in an intermediate or mixed band with advanced students. If a CLS student would like to learn an instrument when a beginning band is not offered, the school offers after-school lessons as needed.

The band usually has two concerts annually: Christmas time and spring. The Christmas concert typically features mostly sacred music, and the spring concert a wider variety of music. The CLS students also sing in chorus at these concerts, and there is some opportunity for individual performances as well.
